President of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic and Secretary-General of the Frente POLISARIO, Mr. Brahim Ghali, stressed the need to activate existing mechanisms and provide them with the necessary resources and powers to resolve conflicts across the continent.
In his address during the Extraordinary Summit of the African Union, dedicated to discussing ways to strengthen mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution in Africa, President Brahim Ghali praised the significant progress made by the African Union in building a continental peace and security architecture.
He noted, however, that the real challenge is no longer the creation of additional mechanisms, but rather the effective activation of existing ones and equipping them with the necessary resources and powers so that they can intervene in a timely manner and with the required effectiveness.
President Ghali added that the choice of Luanda to host the extraordinary session carries particular significance, given the struggle-oriented history of the sister Republic of Angola and its experience not only in overcoming conflict and building peace and national reconciliation, but also in light of the prominent role President João Lourenço has consistently played in promoting peace on the continent, as well as his commendable efforts to reduce tensions and defuse conflict hotspots.
President Brahim Ghali extended his appreciation to the African Union and its Commission, as well as to the Peace and Security Council and all AU structures concerned with peace and security, for their efforts to strengthen the continent’s capacity to prevent and resolve conflicts and build lasting peace.
