Two Moroccan women were killed and two men were injured, one of them critically, after a car carrying four members of a Moroccan family plunged into the waters of the Port of Algeciras in southern Spain early Wednesday, September 2, 2026, as they were preparing to board a ferry bound for Tangier.

The accident occurred at around 12:24 a.m. at the Galera quay in berth No. 1, after the vehicle reportedly passed through the waiting area and continued toward the edge of the quay before falling into the sea. Initial information indicates that fog and possibly a loss of the driver’s attention may have contributed to the accident, while authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact circumstances.

The vehicle was carrying two men and two women. The two men managed to escape from the vehicle and reach the surface before being taken to hospital, while the two women remained trapped inside the submerged car.

Rescue teams and divers from the Spanish Civil Guard’s GEAS unit recovered the two women, but both had already died. Spanish media reported that the victims, aged 71 and 43, were Moroccan nationals residing in the province of Segovia.

Several emergency services took part in the rescue operation, including the Coast Guard, Civil Guard, National Police, Port Police, firefighters, and emergency medical services.

The tragedy once again highlights the risks associated with maritime travel and vehicle movement within port areas, particularly at night and in conditions of reduced visibility. Spanish authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the vehicle’s plunge into the sea.
