Algerian Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, the National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, held talks in New York on Thursday with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on developments regarding the Western Sahara issue, in addition to a number of regional and international issues, on the sidelines of the high-level segment of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
According to a statement from the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting addressed in depth the latest developments in Western Sahara, the Sahel and the Middle East. The two ministers agreed to continue consultations and coordination on these issues, both at the bilateral level and within the framework of multilateral organizations.
Regarding the Western Sahara issue, both sides stressed the importance of promoting dialogue and political solutions in accordance with international law and the Charter of the United Nations, reflecting the continued presence of the Sahrawi issue in Algerian-Russian consultations on regional matters on the international agenda.
The discussion of the Sahrawi issue comes as the United Nations prepares to review developments in the file. Algeria had reiterated, during a meeting between Ahmed Attaf and the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, its support for UN efforts and the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination, ahead of an expected Security Council meeting on the Western Sahara issue in October.
Attaf and Lavrov also discussed ways to strengthen relations of friendship and cooperation between Algeria and Russia, as well as expanding economic partnership and bilateral trade. They also reviewed preparations for the third Russia-Africa Summit, scheduled to be held in Moscow in October 2026, and the Arab-Russian Cooperation Forum at the level of foreign ministers, expected to take place next December.

As part of the fourth day of his participation in the high-level segment of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, the National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Attaf, met with his counterpart from the Russian Federation, Mr. Sergey Lavrov.
The meeting was devoted to discussing ways to further strengthen bilateral relations of friendship and cooperation across all fields, and to broaden the prospects for economic partnership and trade between the two countries.
The two sides also held an in-depth exchange on international and regional issues of common interest and agreed to continue consultations and coordination on developments in the Middle East, the Sahel and the Western Sahara issue, both at the bilateral level and within the framework of multilateral organizations, stressing the importance of promoting dialogue and political solutions in accordance with international law and the Charter of the United Nations.
The two ministers also discussed ongoing preparations for the third Russia-Africa Summit, scheduled to be held in Moscow in October 2026, as well as the Arab-Russian Cooperation Forum at the level of foreign ministers, expected to take place next December..
