Mauritanian Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed Elected Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation

The Council of Foreign Ministers of the member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) elected Mauritanian diplomat and former Foreign Minister Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed as the organization’s new Secretary-General today, Thursday, August 27, 2026, succeeding Chadian Hissein Brahim Taha. The election took place during an extraordinary meeting held at the OIC General Secretariat headquarters in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Ould Cheikh Ahmed’s election, which received the support of the organization’s member states, followed an extensive Mauritanian diplomatic campaign over the past several months to rally support for his candidacy. The Mauritanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said he was elected unanimously by the member states during the 23rd Extraordinary Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers.

Ould Cheikh Ahmed succeeds Hissein Brahim Taha, who has served as Secretary-General of the organization since November 2021, with his term officially ending in November 2026.

The new Secretary-General brings more than three decades of extensive diplomatic and UN experience. He served as Mauritania’s Foreign Minister from 2018 to 2022 and held several senior positions within the United Nations, including serving as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Yemen from 2015 to 2018, in addition to assignments related to Libya, Syria and Yemen, as well as humanitarian affairs in Africa and the Middle East.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation comprises 57 member states and is the second-largest intergovernmental organization after the United Nations. It focuses particularly on political, economic and humanitarian issues affecting the Muslim world, foremost among them the Palestinian cause and Jerusalem.

Ould Cheikh Ahmed is expected to lead the General Secretariat at a time when the organization faces a range of sensitive regional and international issues, amid continuing crises in the region and a growing need to coordinate positions among member states and strengthen the OIC’s role in international affairs of common priority.

Major General of Bangladesh appointed MINURSO Force Commander

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres announced Thursday the appointment of Major General Fakhrul Ahsan of Bangladesh as Force Commander of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), the UN said in a statement. Major General Ahsan succeeds Major General Zia Ur Rehman of Pakistan who completed his assignment at the end of March 2022, according to the statement published on the UN website. Major General Ahsan has over 34 years of national and international military leadership experience with the Bangladeshi Army. SPLA carries out new attacks against Moroccan occupation forces in Farsia and Mahbes sectors

Birlahlou (Liberated Territories), 5 September 2022 (SPS) - Units of the Sahrawi People's Liberation Army (SPLA) carried out new attacks against positions of the Moroccan occupying forces in the two sectors of Farsia and Mahbes, indicated Sunday the Sahrawi Ministry of Defense in its communiqué N 622. According to the communiqué, SPLA units bombarded occupying forces in the regions of Oudiat Echedida (Farsia sector), Laakad and Agouira Ould Abelal, Oudi Dhamran and Akrara Fersik (Mahbes sector). Advanced detachments of the Saharawi Army had targeted the Moroccan occupation forces entrenched in the sectors of Aousserd, Atouizki and Mahbès as well as in the regions of Guelb Nos, Tadarourt, Mesmar, Laakad and Agouira Ould Abelal, the communiqué concluded.
