Guterres: The Security Council Is Paralyzed and the UN’s Capacity to Mediate Crises Is Declining

📌 United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres acknowledged that current wars and conflicts have demonstrated that the ability of major powers to impose their will by force has become extremely limited compared with the past.

📌 Guterres acknowledged the paralysis of the UN Security Council and the decline in the United Nations’ ability to mediate in crises in Gaza, Ukraine, Iran, and Sudan, due to the use of the veto by permanent members of the Council. He noted that the absence of accountability has contributed to a growing “sense of impunity” among states.

📌 Guterres warned that a shift toward a multipolar world order without structural reforms to ensure the representation of emerging powers and developing countries could lead to confrontation and direct conflicts, similar to those witnessed in Europe before the First World War.

Major General of Bangladesh appointed MINURSO Force Commander

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres announced Thursday the appointment of Major General Fakhrul Ahsan of Bangladesh as Force Commander of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), the UN said in a statement. Major General Ahsan succeeds Major General Zia Ur Rehman of Pakistan who completed his assignment at the end of March 2022, according to the statement published on the UN website. Major General Ahsan has over 34 years of national and international military leadership experience with the Bangladeshi Army. He served as General Officer Commanding, of the 10th infantry division, and as Area Commander of the Cox's Bazar Area, as Commander of the Bangladeshi Military Academy, and as Brigade Commander in the 16th and 69th Infantry Brigade. SPLA carries out new attacks against Moroccan occupation forces in Farsia and Mahbes sectors

Birlahlou (Liberated Territories), 5 September 2022 (SPS) - Units of the Sahrawi People's Liberation Army (SPLA) carried out new attacks against positions of the Moroccan occupying forces in the two sectors of Farsia and Mahbes, indicated Sunday the Sahrawi Ministry of Defense in its communiqué N 622. According to the communiqué, SPLA units bombarded occupying forces in the regions of Oudiat Echedida (Farsia sector), Laakad and Agouira Ould Abelal, Oudi Dhamran and Akrara Fersik (Mahbes sector). Advanced detachments of the Saharawi Army had targeted the Moroccan occupation forces entrenched in the sectors of Aousserd, Atouizki and Mahbès as well as in the regions of Guelb Nos, Tadarourt, Mesmar, Laakad and Agouira Ould Abelal, the communiqué concluded.
