BREAKING | Norway’s King Harald V Dies at 89

King Harald V of Norway died on Friday, August 28, 2026, at the age of 89, the Norwegian Royal Palace and government announced.

The Norwegian government said King Harald died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital at 6:35 a.m. local time.

The King had been receiving medical treatment in hospital. His death marks the end of more than three decades on the Norwegian throne. Harald V was born on February 21, 1937, and became king in 1991, succeeding his father, King Olav V.

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre expressed his deep sorrow, saying that the entire nation was mourning and paying tribute to the King’s long life dedicated to Norway. He praised Harald V for his warmth, wisdom and openness, and for his role in bringing Norwegians together during difficult moments.

Following the King’s death, Norway is preparing for the formal transition to the new monarch. The government is scheduled to meet in an extraordinary Council of State at the Royal Palace, where it will meet the new King.

King Harald V’s death brings to an end a reign spanning more than three decades and marks a significant moment in Norway’s modern history.

Major General of Bangladesh appointed MINURSO Force Commander

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres announced Thursday the appointment of Major General Fakhrul Ahsan of Bangladesh as Force Commander of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), the UN said in a statement. Major General Ahsan succeeds Major General Zia Ur Rehman of Pakistan who completed his assignment at the end of March 2022, according to the statement published on the UN website. Major General Ahsan has over 34 years of national and international military leadership experience with the Bangladeshi Army. He served as General Officer Commanding, of the 10th infantry division, and as Area Commander of the Cox's Bazar Area, as Commander of the Bangladeshi Military Academy, and as Brigade Commander in the 16th and 69th Infantry Brigade. SPLA carries out new attacks against Moroccan occupation forces in Farsia and Mahbes sectors

Birlahlou (Liberated Territories), 5 September 2022 (SPS) - Units of the Sahrawi People's Liberation Army (SPLA) carried out new attacks against positions of the Moroccan occupying forces in the two sectors of Farsia and Mahbes, indicated Sunday the Sahrawi Ministry of Defense in its communiqué N 622. According to the communiqué, SPLA units bombarded occupying forces in the regions of Oudiat Echedida (Farsia sector), Laakad and Agouira Ould Abelal, Oudi Dhamran and Akrara Fersik (Mahbes sector). Advanced detachments of the Saharawi Army had targeted the Moroccan occupation forces entrenched in the sectors of Aousserd, Atouizki and Mahbès as well as in the regions of Guelb Nos, Tadarourt, Mesmar, Laakad and Agouira Ould Abelal, the communiqué concluded.
