King Felipe VI of Spain has held an emergency meeting at the Zarzuela Palace to discuss the defensive and military situation in the city of Ceuta.
The meeting was attended by Spain’s Minister of Defence, the Chief of Defence Staff, the Commander of Ceuta, as well as senior operational commanders of the Spanish Armed Forces.
The move is considered exceptional, not only because of the nature of the meeting and the high-ranking military officials taking part, but also because of its timing amid recent developments surrounding Ceuta.
Most notably, the meeting was officially announced by the Spanish Royal Household, confirming that the Ceuta issue is now being addressed at the highest levels of the Spanish state, particularly from the perspective of national defence and security.
The development raises questions about the nature of the circumstances that prompted the emergency meeting and whether Madrid is preparing for a new phase in its security and military approach to the city of Ceuta.
