Police in Barcelona, Spain, arrested a man on Thursday on suspicion of being responsible for a fire that broke out in the Collserola area, north of the city. The blaze burned more than 54 hectares and led to the precautionary evacuation of 35 people, while investigations continue to establish the circumstances of the incident and determine responsibility.
According to Spanish media reports, the detainee is of Moroccan origin and has been referred to the judicial authorities, as investigators continue to collect evidence and verify the circumstances surrounding the outbreak of the fire.
The suspect was arrested following statements from several witnesses who said they had seen him setting fire to containers near the area that was later identified as the point where the blaze began, along Alta de Roquetes road in the Nou Barris district of Barcelona.
According to information reported in the Spanish media, police found several lighters among the suspect’s belongings. Investigators also found a cigarette butt and several lighters at what is known as the fire’s “zero point.” These items are currently undergoing analysis to determine whether they are directly linked to the suspect.
The fire broke out on Tuesday evening and remained active for much of Wednesday, burning more than 54 hectares of the Collserola area. As the flames approached residential areas, 35 people were temporarily evacuated, while emergency crews intervened to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading.
According to statements reportedly given by some witnesses to police, the detainee is suspected of having said that he heard voices ordering him to start fires. These claims remain part of the investigation, pending verification of their accuracy and assessment of their potential implications for the judicial case.
The Mossos d'Esquadra police force is currently working to reconstruct the suspect’s movements and compare the evidence found at the scene of the fire with the items in his possession when he was arrested.
The investigation is expected to determine whether the fire was deliberately started and whether the available evidence is sufficient to establish the suspect’s criminal responsibility.
